Things to Do in Huntsville This Fall: Farms, Markets, and Outdoor Events

Fall in Huntsville is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy everything the Rocket City has to offer. From pumpkin patches and seasonal festivals to farmers markets and outdoor concerts, there are plenty of ways to soak up the season. Whether you’ve lived here for years or are just getting to know the area, here are a few of the best things to do in the Huntsville area this fall.

1. Visit Local Farms and Pumpkin Patches

Huntsville has several farms that host fall festivals and pumpkin patches — perfect for families, day dates, or just enjoying a fall afternoon. Tate Farms is a local favorite, offering hayrides, corn cribs, barnyard animals, and wide fields of pick-your-own pumpkins. From September through November, they also host Tate’s Table, a reservation-only, family-style meal featuring home-cooked recipes passed down through generations — the perfect complement to a day on the farm.

For something a little different, Boyd Family Farm features an exotic animal park and petting zoo, plus blueberry fields and a pumpkin patch. Scott’s Orchard in Hazel Green is especially popular during fall apple season (September through December), offering u-pick apples, cider slushies, and a market full of fresh produce and seasonal treats.

2. Explore Farmers Markets

Nothing says fall in North Alabama like a trip to one of Huntsville’s farmers markets, filled with the flavors and colors of the season. Strolling through the market is the perfect chance to support local vendors while stocking up on autumn favorites. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, you’ll also find pumpkins, gourds, and fall décor items to bring a touch of the season home.

The Madison County Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through November 15th, offering a wide variety of produce, baked goods, and seasonal items. For a downtown experience, the Greene Street Market is a Thursday evening favorite, running through October 30th. With flowers, handmade goods, and live music, it’s as much a community gathering as it is a shopping trip.

3. Enjoy Outdoor Events at Huntsville Botanical Garden

The Huntsville Botanical Garden is one of the city’s most popular attractions year-round, but fall brings its own lineup of events and activities. The Scarecrow Trail & Enchanted Forest transforms the garden with hundreds of whimsical scarecrows and creative displays that wind through the paths. Families can also enjoy seasonal programming like FestiFall, which features live entertainment, children’s activities, and autumn-themed fun.

Even four-legged friends can join in during Dog Days at the Garden, when pups are welcome to explore the grounds. With vibrant seasonal plantings, crisp fall air, and plenty of special events, the Botanical Garden is the perfect spot for making fall memories.

4. Take a Scenic Hike

North Alabama’s fall foliage is beautiful, and Huntsville is surrounded by trails that show it off. Monte Sano State Park is a local favorite, with more than 20 miles of trails ranging from easy loops to challenging climbs with sweeping views of the valley. The park also offers cabins you can rent if you’d like to turn your hike into a weekend getaway surrounded by nature.

Other nearby trails include Blevins Gap Nature Preserve, known for its overlooks and sunset views, and Rainbow Mountain Preserve, which offers shorter hikes with rocky terrain and beautiful wooded scenery. All are within a short drive of downtown Huntsville. Whether you’re hiking with family, friends, or your dog, Huntsville’s trail system gives you plenty of ways to take in North Alabama's fall colors.

5. Tour Huntsville's Breweries

Fall is the perfect season to check out Huntsville’s thriving brewery scene. Many local spots feature outdoor patios, live music, and seasonal craft brews that make for a fun night out with friends.

At Campus 805, you’ll find Straight to Ale and Yellowhammer Brewing, along with a mix of restaurants, bars, and entertainment. Grab a wood-fired pizza at Yellowhammer, try tacos or small plates from one of the on-site eateries, or track down a food truck parked nearby. Between arcade games, axe throwing, and even a hidden speakeasy, Campus 805 has plenty to keep you entertained beyond the beer.

Other local favorites include Green Bus Brewing, a cozy downtown taproom with a loyal following and creative small-batch beers, and Innerspace Brewing Company, which pairs a sci-fi theme with a welcoming atmosphere. Together, Huntsville’s breweries offer everything from trivia nights and live music to unique brews you can only find in the Rocket City.

6. Experience Huntsville’s Haunted History

Looking for something beyond pumpkin patches and hikes? Huntsville’s fall traditions also shine a spotlight on its rich history and ghostly legends. The Huntsville Ghost Walks are a local favorite, leading you by lantern light through downtown streets while guides share eerie stories and legends.

For another glimpse into the past, the Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll is hosted by the Huntsville Pilgrimage Association each year on the third Sunday of October. This year’s event will be held on October 19, 2025, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. This free event is one of the largest living history strolls in the nation, featuring more than 60 costumed characters, traditional music, antique autos, and exhibits that bring Huntsville’s past to life. Donations go toward preserving the cemetery’s historic walls and tombstones.

7. Catch Live Music and Events at The Camp

For a mix of live entertainment, food, and community spirit, The Camp is one of Huntsville’s most dynamic fall attractions. The outdoor venue hosts everything from weekend concerts and family nights to seasonal markets and cultural festivals.

Foodies will love the rotating food trucks and pop-up restaurants, while music lovers can enjoy performances from local and regional bands. The Camp also organizes special events like trivia nights, art shows, and holiday-themed gatherings, making it a go-to spot if you’re looking for something different to do each week.

With its eclectic mix of food, music, and community events, The Camp offers a little something for everyone — and its event calendar is always packed.
